Cairo. The 35mm Collection

Streets · Doorways

The Streets and Doorways series explores the intimate urban fabric of Cairo through its narrow lanes, entrances, and overlooked passages. Taken in 1994 while wandering through the city’s historic districts, the photographs capture moments of everyday life unfolding within streets that appear both worn and vibrant. Behind metal gates, mysterious alleyways open into hidden spaces; crumbling streets carry the movement of people pushing carts or vendors standing patiently in front of their small, hole-in-the-wall shops. Veiled women move quickly through the frame, pedestrians weave between stalls, and fragments of daily activity animate the surrounding architecture.

Many of the black and white and slide images reveal unexpected layers within the city: hidden courtyards containing workshops, aging Art Deco buildings standing beside older monuments, and weathered façades that bear the marks of time. At street level, life spills outward—people eating and gathering outdoors, children lingering in alleys, and moments of play emerging in unlikely corners, such as a group of mischievous children perched along a worn stone staircase. Together, these photographs offer a glimpse into the textures of Cairo’s street life, where architecture and everyday activity merge to form the living character of the city.
