Riyadh: A Visual Palimpsest
This photographic exploration of the Riyadh region documents a landscape undergoing rapid transformation, where layers of tradition and modernity coexist in complex and often fragile ways. Moving through the city with camera in hand, I focused not only on iconic landmarks but also on the everyday urban fabric—spaces shaped by memory, migration, and shifting patterns of use. Captured using my professional digital medium-format Fujifilm GFX100S, the images emphasize depth, precision, and subtle detail, allowing the textures of Riyadh’s built environment to emerge with clarity.
The Riyadh series is structured in three parts—buildings, districts, and streets—each offering a distinct lens through which to understand the city. The first focuses on individual structures, from institutional landmarks to overlooked modernist buildings, highlighting how architectural form expresses ambition and identity. The second shifts to districts and neighborhoods, documenting layered urban fabrics shaped by migration, informal activity, and everyday life. The third turns to streets, the connective tissue of the city, where encounters, commerce, and social exchange unfold, revealing Riyadh as a dynamic and lived urban landscape.
