Why This Glossary?
A glossary for translating architectural and urban terms from English to Arabic is essential for many reasons. Technically, there are specific terms in English that lack clear equivalents in Arabic, such as gentrification, suburbanization, and urban imaginary. Tools like Google Translate often provide generic and inaccurate translations. Culturally, there is a need for the architectural profession to develop its unique identity within an Arab context to avoid dependence on Western expertise. This glossary would facilitate the translation of key works in architecture and urban planning, enabling students to be educated in their native language and decolonizing the architectural curriculum. The glossary acknowledges that using “A” in the title suggests that it represents one of many possibilities, using terms from my efforts in translating my book on Riyadh. Although the glossary currently has 768 words, much more work remains to be done. This is the first step in enabling Arab architects to assert their own unique identity.
لماذا قائمة مصطلحات؟
يُعدّ معجم المصطلحات المعمارية والحضرية من الإنجليزية إلى العربية ضروريًا لأسباب عديدة. فمن الناحية الفنية، توجد مصطلحات محددة في الإنجليزية تفتقر إلى مقابلات واضحة في العربية، مثل التجديد الحضري، والتوسع العمراني، والتصور الحضري. وغالبًا ما تُقدّم أدوات مثل ترجمة جوجل ترجمات عامة وغير دقيقة. ومن الناحية الثقافية، ثمة حاجة إلى أن تُطوّر مهنة الهندسة المعمارية هويتها الفريدة ضمن السياق العربي لتجنب الاعتماد على الخبرات الغربية. من شأن هذا المعجم أن يُسهّل ترجمة الأعمال الرئيسية في الهندسة المعمارية والتخطيط العمراني، مما يُمكّن الطلاب من التعلّم بلغتهم الأم ويُحرّر المناهج المعمارية من هيمنة الثقافة الغربية. يُقرّ المعجم بأن استخدام حرف "أ" في العنوان يُشير إلى أنه يُمثّل أحد الاحتمالات العديدة، باستخدام مصطلحات من جهودي في ترجمة كتابي عن الرياض. ورغم أن المعجم يحتوي حاليًا على 768 كلمة، إلا أن هناك الكثير من العمل الذي لا يزال يتعين القيام به. هذه هي الخطوة الأولى لتمكين المعماريين العرب من تأكيد هويتهم الفريدة.
