Mapping the People’s Neighborhoods. Tracing the Sha’abiya Across the Emirates
The survey of Sha’abiya neighborhoods unfolded as a journey across the full geographic and cultural breadth of the UAE, extending far beyond Abu Dhabi and Dubai into remote and often overlooked territories—from the desert landscapes of Liwa near the Saudi border, to the eastern coast, the mountainous terrain of Masafi, and the northern emirates. Guided by informants, prior research, and chance encounters, this fieldwork revealed a dispersed yet enduring network of neighborhoods that remain deeply embedded in the country’s social and spatial fabric. Through extensive photography, mapping, and on-site observation, the survey documented not only the architectural consistency of the Sha’abiya—its courtyard-based layouts and low-density planning—but also its remarkable diversity, shaped over time by residents through extensions, landscaping, and everyday adaptations. What emerges is a portrait of a living urbanism that stands in contrast to the spectacle of contemporary Gulf cities: a grounded, evolving environment that continues to sustain communities while offering critical insights into belonging, resilience, and the lived experience of modernity in the UAE .

The graphic analysis of the Sha’abiya neighborhood distills its spatial logic into a series of diagrams that reveal both its underlying order and its incremental transformation over time. Through plan studies, density mappings, and figure-ground drawings, the analysis highlights a consistent framework—low-density plots, courtyard-based houses, and clearly defined boundaries—while also capturing the subtle variations introduced by residents. Additions, extensions, and landscape interventions gradually disrupt the original uniformity, producing a layered and heterogeneous urban fabric. These visual tools make legible what is often difficult to grasp on the ground: the Sha’abiya as a dynamic system, where a standardized model evolves into a rich, lived environment shaped by everyday practices and long-term adaptation.
