Marais District

The Marais District Series was photographed in 2001 using medium-format black-and-white film, capturing the neighborhood in the quiet hours of early morning. Arriving before the crowds, I found the streets largely empty, allowing the architecture to reveal itself with unusual clarity. Gradually, residents began to emerge, heading to work, while cafés slowly opened their doors, the first signs of daily life animating the scene. This transitional moment—between stillness and activity—gave the impression of having the district almost entirely to myself, heightening the sense of intimacy and observation.

Historically associated with Paris’s Jewish community, the Marais still retains traces of that layered past, alongside its medieval street pattern and preserved architectural fabric. Narrow streets, stone façades, and modest shopfronts evoke a continuity that resists the pace of modern transformation. The black-and-white medium reinforces this timeless quality, emphasizing texture, light, and shadow. Together, the images capture the Marais as a place suspended between history and everyday life, where memory lingers in both the built environment and the quiet rituals of morning.
