Quartier de La Chapelle

The Quartier de La Chapelle Series was photographed using the Fuji X100, capturing a Parisian neighborhood shaped by migration, cultural exchange, and everyday urban life. The area conveys strong African influences, visible in storefronts, signage, and the rhythm of street activity. Art galleries, community spaces, and layers of graffiti contribute to a textured environment where creativity and informal expression coexist. From certain vantage points, the neighborhood opens onto a vast industrial landscape, while in the foreground of a community center, a communal planting area becomes a shared space of cultivation and gathering.

Along the main street, the sensory richness of the district becomes especially apparent. We stopped at an African restaurant and shared a delicious—if notably spicy—meal of chicken and rice, surrounded by the sounds and conversations of the neighborhood. These moments of everyday interaction underscore La Chapelle’s role as a lived, multicultural environment rather than a curated destination. The photographs capture this vitality: a place where migrant communities shape urban space through food, art, and collective presence, creating a distinctive and evolving Parisian landscape.
