New York City
The New York Series presents a photographic exploration of the city captured between 2014 and 2016 using my Fuji X100, focusing on a set of recent architectural interventions that reshape the experience of Manhattan’s urban landscape. The first group of images centers on Santiago Calatrava’s Oculus at the World Trade Center, photographed just before its opening, where the structure’s soaring form and outstretched wings suggest motion and flight. Crowds move fluidly through its luminous interior, emphasizing the building’s role as both transit hub and spatial spectacle, while its expressive form engages—sometimes uneasily—with the dense fabric of Lower Manhattan.
The second section turns to Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, Louis Kahn’s posthumous work on Roosevelt Island, where a carefully orchestrated sequence of spaces frames views toward the Manhattan skyline. Here, stone, landscape, and inscription converge—Roosevelt’s words etched into granite—creating a site of contemplation, repose, and quiet monumentality. The series then moves to the Whitney Museum of American Art by Renzo Piano, anchored at the edge of the High Line, where shifting volumes, terraces, and observation decks open outward toward the Meatpacking District and landmarks such as the Standard Hotel, reinforcing the building’s dialogue with the surrounding city. The final group, titled “The Long Series,” offers a more experimental reading of Manhattan: images cropped in exaggerated horizontal and vertical formats that accentuate the city’s soaring skyscrapers and relentless movement. Together, these perspectives capture New York as a place where architecture, memory, and motion intersect in constantly evolving ways.
